A delicate painting of a gymnast doing a handstand has appeared on the wall of a destroyed building outside Kyiv and appears to be the work of British graffiti artist known as Banksy.

Banksy posted photos on his Instagram page work of art in Borodyanka, northwest of the Ukrainian capital.

The city was the target of bombing and fighting at the start of the Russian invasion, which turned apartment buildings into charred and shelled carcasses.

The gymnast mural is black and white and is painted so that it looks like she is doing a handstand on the crumpled remains of cinder blocks sticking out of the blackened wall. Above her rise the gutted and destroyed entrails of what were once apartments.

Another mural in the city – of a little boy throwing judo at a man – also resembled Banksy’s, although it was not posted to his Instagram page.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a judoka.

A Banksy-like painting, also in black and white and again unconfirmed to be his by Banksy himself, also appeared on the wall of a war-damaged building in the town of Irpin, on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv.

It shows a rhythmic gymnast pirouetting with a ribbon, above a gaping hole in the wall.
