U.S. vegetable imports to peak at 9.3 million tonnes in 2022

The volume of imports into the US fresh vegetable market is expected to increase from 8.9 million tonnes in 2021 to 9.3 million tonnes in 2022. In 2020, Mexico (6.1 million tonnes) was the largest supplier of vegetables to the United States, with a 75% share of total imports. In addition, vegetable imports from Mexico quadrupled the figures recorded by the second largest supplier, Canada (1.4 million tonnes).
During the past year, the volume growth rate from Mexico amounted to + 2.5%. The other supplier countries recorded the following average annual growth rates for imports: Canada (+ 7.0% per year) and Peru (-4.7% per year).
In terms of value, Mexico ($ 7.3 billion) was the largest supplier of vegetables to the United States, accounting for 70% of total imports. The second place in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($ 1.9 billion), with an 18% share of total imports.
The average price of vegetable imports was $ 1,294 per tonne in 2020, up 8.6% from the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat between the main supplying countries. The country with the highest price was Peru ($ 1,759 per tonne), while the price for Mexico ($ 1,206 per tonne) was among the lowest. The most notable price growth rate was achieved by Mexico, while the prices of other major suppliers experienced more modest growth rates.
